Immediately after Rohith Vemula's suicide at the Hyderabad Central University campus, the top leadership of the ruling TRS in Telangana went hyper, attacking the BJP and its Union minister from the state Bandaru Dattatreya.
TRS MP and Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao's daughter took on Bandaru holding him responsible for the tragic death of Rohith. Other top leaders of TRS also attacked BJP and Bandaru, demanding stringent action under the SC/ST Atrocities Prevention Act.
However, the top leadership of TRS went silent suddenly on Tuesday afternoon. According to insiders, the TRS is in a big dilemma over how to handle the case. Since TRS is the ruling party, the investigation is the responsibility of local police, which reports to the same TRS government. Under the stringent SC/ST act, a case has already been registered against Hyderabad Central University Vice Chancellor Appa Rao and Union Minister of Labour Bandaru Dattatreya. So far no arrest has been made by the Telangana Police.
Police sources say they are verifying the documents as there are two different birth certificates. But, the political analysts are giving various other reasons for the delay. They say after going hyper and attacking Bandaru on first two days, the top leadership of TRS has gone silent for other reasons.
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections are happening in the first week of February. The TRS, which is not strong in the capital city, is making all possible efforts to win the Corporation. It does not want to generate sympathy for Bandaru Dattatreya who is Secundarabad BJP MP ahead GHMC elections. The BJP is strong in Secundarabad.
Moreover, the TRS also has good equations with the BJP at the Centre. Chief Minister KCR does not want the top leadership of TRS to launch an attack on the BJP. Because of that only the TRS lower rung leaders are talking. Except Congress and MIM, two other major political parties, TDP and YSRCP, also close to BJP. They are also unlikely to attack the BJP.
TRS is in a tricky situation. It can't be seen as party which is going slow on the death of a Dalit student. At the same time, TRS does not want to annoy the BJP by going all out against the VC and Bandaru.
The TRS is still optimistic about its entry into the Modi Cabinet at the Centre. Therefore it does not want to shut the doors on the BJP.
