Ram Gopal Varma is a role model for a lot of actors & technicians in Indian Film Industry. There is a feeling among majority of the people that he was unable to deliver films of his stature in the recent past. Particularly, His graph kept falling post 'Raktha Charithra'.
Once in a while, Ram Gopal Varma proves to the World that he is still capable of making enjoyable films. Promos gave a feeling 'Killing Veerappan' is one such movie where we get to see one of Ramu's best works. Did this biopic lived up to the expectations?
Synopsis:
Story of 'Killing Veerappan' is based on 'Operation Cocoon' chalked out to assassinate Asia's biggest criminal Veerappan. After repeated failure to either nab or kill the dreaded smuggler, Special Task Force Officer Kannan comes up with a plan of making Veerappan step out of the dense forest area to accomplish the mission. At first, Kannan uses Veerappan's Wife Muthu Lakshmi for the operation but the plan will be foiled by the smuggler. Then, what did Kannan & his Team do to put an end to Veerappan forms the rest of the story!
Performances:
Sandeep Bharadwaj has breathed life into Veerappan's character and makes everyone believe he is for real with his body language. Detailing done for his role deserve special mention. Full credit to Varma & Make-Up Man for getting the perfect look.
Shivraj Kumar who played the cop was equally impressive in his role, especially during the close-up shots. Parul Yadav does well but Ramu irritates with too many unwanted close-up shots of her. Yagna as Veerappan's Wife is alright. Rest of the cast did their job to perfection.
Pros:
Performances
RGV-mark Taking
Cinematography
Background Score
Cons:
Lack of Commercial Elements
Technicalities:
'Killing Veerappan' is a Technicians Movie. Background Score by Sandy and Camera Work by Raami were fabulous. They complemented each other very well and RGV made good use of their contributions. Songs played in background are just okay. After a long time, Ram Gopal Varma showed how good he is as a filmmaker when chosen a right subject. Production Values were pretty good.
Analysis:
Ram Gopal Varma has got a distinct style in making biopics & films based on real life incidents, be it 'Raktha Charitra' or 'Mumbai 26/11'. He makes sure that the intensity was intact from title cards till the end and his style of taking is appreciated widely. 'Killing Veerappan' scores in these two aspects.
The Maverick Film succeeded in presenting the lifestyle of Veerappan, smuggling activity and Operation Cocoon so well. As this is a true story, There isn't much to complain about the lack of too many twists & turns. RGV tried his best to keep the proceedings as interesting as possible.
In the movie, There is a sequence showing the death of Veerappan's Daughter. In the cops point of view, Veerappam deliberately killed his daughter to escape from them. Whereas, The smuggler's wife says her daughter died after accidentally falling from Veerappan's hand. Finally, The Hero gives a conclusion that the girl died because of the wrong path chosen by Veerappan. This one sequence gives us the impression the kind of understanding RGV have in matters related to crime & criminals.
Even though the film mainly focusses on 'Operation Coccon', Ram Gopal Varma touched other aspects as well to present Veerappan's past life in the form of flashbacks. The love track of Veerappan & Interval Attack Sequence stands out. Camera Work & BGM in interval block is marvelous. Even though the Second Half wasn't as gripping as the First Half, Ramu picturized the Climax is a superb manner. Those who embrace realistic films & Varma's taking will love 'Killing Veerappan' for sure.
Bottom Lime: RGV is BACK!
